WHAT IS AN AUTHORIZATION FOR MEDICAL SERVICES? An authorization, also known as a pre-certification, is a review process where ADOC healthcare nurses and/or Medical Directors work with your physician to determine: 1) Whether a procedure, treatment or service is a covered benefit; and 2) Whether a procedure is medically necessary
HOW DOES THE AUTHORIZATION PROCESS WORK? ADOC requires that an authorization number be obtained for most medical services, including hospital admissions. When a request for an authorization number comes to ADOC from your provider, the Utilization Management Department of ADOC evaluates the request using nationally recognized guidelines to assist in the review. These guidelines are consistent with sound clinical principals and processes and have been developed with involvement from actively practicing health providers. ADOC determines what services are covered based on your plan benefits and using these guidelines. When guidelines do not exist, clinical resource tools based on clinical evidence are used.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE A SPECIALIST? Generally yes, however there are a few exceptions, depending upon your health plan benefits. Open Access is available for any ADOC-contracted Gynecologist (OB/GYN).
